The microbial metabolism of organic matter (OM) in seagrass beds can create sulfidic conditions detrimental to seagrass growth;
iron (Fe) potentially has ameliorating effects through titration of the sulfides and the precipitation of iron-sulfide minerals
into the sediment. In this study, the biogeochemical effects of Fe availability and its interplay with sulfur and OM on sulfide
toxicity, phosphorous (P) availability, seagrass growth and community structure were tested. The availability of Fe and OM
was manipulated in a 2 × 2 factorial experiment arranged in a Latin square, with four replicates per treatment. The treatments
included the addition of Fe, the addition of OM, the addition of both Fe and OM as well as no addition. The experiment was
conducted in an oligotrophic, iron-deficient seagrass bed. Fe had an 84.5% retention efficiency in the sediments with the
concentration of Fe increasing in the seagrass leaves over the course of the experiment. Porewater chemistry was significantly
altered with a dramatic decrease in sulfide levels in Fe addition plots while sulfide levels increased in the OM addition
treatments. Phosphorus increased in seagrass leaves collected in the Fe addition plots. Decreased sulfide stress was evidenced
by heavier δ34S in leaves and rhizomes from plots to which Fe was added. The OM addition negatively affected seagrass growth but increased
P availability; the reduced sulfide stress in Fe added plots resulted in elevated productivity. Fe availability may be an
important determinant of the impact that OM has on seagrass vitality in carbonate sediments vegetated with seagrasses. 相似文献

Lake Tanganyika comprises the oldest and most diverse species flock of cichlid fishes. Many species are subdivided into numerous populations, often classified as geographical races, colour morphs or sister species. Unlike younger species flocks, in which speciation is accompanied by eco-morphological diversification that of Lake Tanganyika is at a mature stage with little further morphological change, most probably caused by stabilizing selection. This study addresses body shape differences among three genetically distinct but morphologically similar populations of Tropheus moorii , by focusing on bony structures of the cichlid head. We test by means of geometric morphological methods whether shape changes in the cichlid head are based on particular osteological differences. Specimens were disarticulated enzymatically, and standardized digital images of the disarticulated bony elements were taken. A landmark system was established for the dentary, articular, premaxilla, quadrate and the preopercle. Only the dentary shows significant differentiation among the three populations. Since all three populations live in similar cobble habitats and occupy the same trophic niche, the observed difference in the shape of the dentary can either be explained by different directional selection due to subtle habitat differences, or by neutral drift constrained by borders enforced through stabilizing selection. Learning has been postulated to ‘drive’ evolution, but its influence on adaptive evolution in heterogeneous environments has not been formally examined. We used a spatially explicit individual‐based model to study the effect of learning on the expansion and adaptation of a species to a novel habitat. Fitness was mediated by a behavioural trait (resource preference), which in turn was determined by both the genotype and learning. Our findings indicate that learning substantially increases the range of parameters under which the species expands and adapts to the novel habitat, particularly if the two habitats are separated by a sharp ecotone (rather than a gradient). However, for a broad range of parameters, learning reduces the degree of genetically‐based local adaptation following the expansion and facilitates maintenance of genetic variation within local populations. Thus, in heterogeneous environments learning may facilitate evolutionary range expansions and maintenance of the potential of local populations to respond to subsequent environmental changes. 相似文献

It has been experimentally established that cultivation of yeast cells in depleted, dietary or normal nutrient aqueous solutions enriched with ortho-H2O spin isomers is accompanied by an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide produced by the cells and an increase in their biomass. It has been revealed that the rate of metabolic processes and biological activity depends on the quality of nutrition and enhances in time in both nutrient solutions. In contrast, the reproductive function and the rate of cell division are insusceptible to the components of nutrition, but intensified in a solution enriched with ortho-H2O similar to retardation of aging. The observed effects are discussed in assumption that an increase of a portion of ortho-H2O molecules occurs in the neighborhood of water channels in the cell membrane that let through only monomers of H2O and determine the rate vicinity of metabolic processes. 相似文献

Age composition and the rate of growth of kaluga Acipenser dauricus from the estuary of the Amur and the Amur lagoon have been analyzed. Differences in the distribution of juvenile and mature individuals of kaluga in the river estuary and the lagoon were revealed. Males are dominant among mature individuals aged 18–26 years, and females are dominanat at an age 27–43 years. Females and males of the same age do not differ in length and body weight. A decrease in the rate of linear and gravimetric growth of mature individuals at the modern stage (2005–2008) compared to the period of 1965–1982 was revealed. Juvenile individuals of kaluga from the near-estuarine part of the Amur and its lagoon are inferior in the rate of growth to fish of the same age caught in the river channel, 500 km to the south. 相似文献
